The sound is healing
Vibrational Resonance:
Everything in the body—cells, tissues, and organs—vibrates at specific frequencies. When these vibrations are disrupted (due to stress, illness, etc.), targeted sound frequencies (like tuning forks, gongs, or singing bowls) can help bring the body back into balance. This process is often called entrainment.
Brainwave Alteration:
Certain sound frequencies can shift brainwave activity:
Delta (0.5–4 Hz): Deep sleep, healing, regeneration
Theta (4–8 Hz): Deep meditation, intuition, creativity
Alpha (8–14 Hz): Relaxed focus, reduced anxiety
Beta (14–30 Hz): Alertness, concentration
People find that when their brainwaves shift to a more relaxed state that they can meditate more easily.
Nervous System Regulation:
Soothing sounds reduce cortisol (the stress hormone) and activate the parasympathetic nervous system ("rest and digest" mode), which promotes healing, digestion, and cellular repair. We stimulate the vagus nerve which can down-regulate our nervous system when we exhale for a long time and sing or hum.
Chakra and Energy Balancing (in holistic traditions):
Sound, especially vocal chanting or specific frequencies (like 528 Hz or 432 Hz), is used to balance and unblock chakras or energy centers in the body.
